Say, how many of yall are familiar with the Toronto rap crew known as Backburner? Some of yall are up on em an some of yall prolly aint -- theyre a sprawling, disparate collective of spirited, often wildly iconoclastic, crazy rap talents, ranging from classical boom bap artisans like the dependably dope homeboys Chokeules (Justin Lepine) and Ambition (Joseph Ward) to super-outré avant-garde experimentalists like Thesis Sahib (James Kirkpatrick), with some of my closest friends in rap and in the world -- including Les Seaforth, Jesse McDonald and Miguel Zammit, who will all be contributing to my brilliant second album in some or other amazing way -- sandwiched in the middle. Im not a formal Backburner initiate, but Im proud to be part of the clans massive extended fam, and this quality new project from the man who is likely the groups biggest breakout star, Grand Wizzard Ghettosocks, helps to demonstrate why. Its end-to-end boom bap heatery, with Socks God-given too-cool-for-school rap voice, bangin beats, and sick guest shots from the beloved homegirl Phoenix PHoenix Pagliacci and the seemingly ageless, always unorthodox East Coast dons Elliot Eldasensei Williams and Sadat X. Socks can spit clever punchlines about being doper than you, dating your sister and making you shit yourself from sheer inadequacy forever and ever, but hes always had an underrated knack for emotional songs -- on his last album it was Dont Turn Around and The Roof, and this time its Fate and Outside. Socks charisma and mic presence are so obvious and undeniable that even the Junos and the CBC go nuts for him, and if anything, this is by far the best full-length work of his Ive ever heard. Fists up! Backburner rising! Salute! music.ghettosocks/album/for-you-pretty-things
