Scale of ongoing Ebola outbreak in West Africa (particularly in the Mano River Union sub-region) is unprecedented, with approximately 1323 confirmed and suspected cases reported, including 729 deaths. At the recent MRU Extraordinary Meeting of Heads of state, held on Friday, August 1, 2014 in Conakry, a new joint US$ 100 million response plan was launched. Three of the four Presidents of the MRU member-States, Alpha Conde of Guinea, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia and Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone, attended the meeting. Also in attendance were the Ivorian Minister of Health (who represented President Alassane Ouattara of Ia Cote dIvoire) and Madam Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health organization (WHO), a specialized agency of the United Nations headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
