Scene 6 Act 3—The Familiar: (The curtain opens with 2/3rds of the stage, stage left and the back corner of the stage, set for the masquerade ball where there are throngs of people dancing, talking, and feasting. They’re dressed in formal eloquence and most of them are masked or partially masked. There’s a balcony terrace set all the way diagonally across the length of the ball room separated by a set of French doors that are open on the far left of the stage. This spot on the stage is dimly lit.) (Yet stage left, in the front corner on the outskirt of the masquerade ball, is The Sovereign Prince and The Writer. A spot light fades in on them after the audience has had time to take in the scene, about 5 minutes. The Sovereign Prince bows slightly toward The Writer and he offers her his hand. She curtsies slightly and she hesitantly takes his hand. When he stands up he switches her hand to his left hand and turns to lead her toward the two chairs that are sitting in the front corner stage left of the stage. When they get to the chairs he puts his right hand upon the back of the chair and with her hand still in his left hand he gently leads her into sitting in the chair. Then he puts his other hand on top of hers and gently squeezes her hand in-between the two of his as a gesture of sincerity, good intent, and respect, to make her feel at ease. Then The Sovereign Prince gently releases her hand as he sits down in the other chair beside her.) The Sovereign Prince: (He studies her face and though she meets his eye contact with a shy smile, shortly after making eye contact she looks down at her hands. He sits back in his chair in an effort to make her feel more at ease.) We were given a lot to think about tonight. It’s certainly a lot to think about. The Writer: (She takes a deep breath and as she exhales she relaxes and looks up at his face, and for a brief moment her defenses are down.) Yes, I can scarcely take it all in. I would be overwhelmed had I not known this night was coming already. The Sovereign Prince: (He looks into her eyes surprised but intrigued by her statement.) You knew tonight was going to happen before it happened? The Writer: (She can feel all the blood rush to her face as she blushes and she stumbles slightly over her words, but determined to get the words out she chooses to be sincerely honest, that’s always been her best approach been able to successfully be any other way.) I just want to say that I’ve always been a quiet person, expressing myself on the page has usually been my form of expression, to tell the world unreservedly what’s on my mind and heart, but when it comes to actually talking to people I started out as very shy and continue to be so to this day, but only occasionally and only with certain people, people whose opinion, beliefs, and thoughts, even feelings I value the most, that is until I get the opportunity to familiarize myself with them. My determination to perform the tasks or to say what I feel is expected of me makes everything come rushing out of my mouth before I’ve had time to think about it. I tend to be too honestly open for some, but it doesn’t bother me what others think. If they don’t like me then I don’t have to worry about working with them unless I feel The King has asked me to work with them, then I will do what I can to change their mind. This is why their opinion, beliefs, thoughts, and feelings matter to me. My desire to do everything I was created to do with the people I was placed with to do them with exceeds my worry that they won’t accept me. Unfortunately until I become comfortable around them I tend to be too quiet around them and when I do talk to them I get nervous and sometimes stumble on my words. I even blush. I don’t know if you can see it but I can sure feel the blood rush to my face. The Sovereign Prince: (He gives her a mischievously smile and with a twinkle in his eye gives her an admiring gaze and then he laughs a little.) I’ll never tell a soul. The Writer: (His sincerity, and thoughtful, respectful nature combined with his easy familiar demeanor with her melts away the rest of her insecurity and nervousness so she relaxes under his insightful gaze and she laughs a little too.) So soon you have become my confidant. (She reaches over and pats his shoulder.) I knew that you and I would be great friends. The Sovereign Prince: (He leans in closer with a kind smile on his face.) Then great friends we shall be. Can I give you a hug? The Writer: Of course! I love hugs. (Then The Sovereign Prince leans in further and gives her a heartfelt hug.) The Sovereign Prince: (He sits back still smiling kindly.) You’re amazing and I’m intrigued. Now tell me how did you know tonight was going to happen before it happened? The Writer: I had another dream about you. It was not your face that I saw in my dream, it was a different face but I would know you even with a different face. You carry an air of nobility about you, chivalrous, thoughtful, and honest. I would recognize your smile anywhere even if it was on a different face. I dreamed that you and I wrote a story that went world-wide together. Your friendship gave the confidence that keep me from doing what’s on my heart. My insecurities and shyness are only two of those things, but you’re friendship has already helped me be a little bit bolder. I also dreamed that you and I had a heart that the creator was writing a story upon, part on mine and part on yours. My friendship helped set you free too to think outside of the box and free your creative side from the traditional way of thinking and doing things. Together we will help each other set others who are bound or imprisoned free from the things that bind them, like religion and those who go to the other extreme and shun a true relationship with the Creator because Religion has severely wounded them. The Sovereign Prince: Wow, I’m pleased to hear that and I look forward to it. I would love to talk to you more about it but I need to go get prepared for the coronation ceremony. Perhaps we can get together tomorrow for lunch and talk some more. The Writer: I would love that! The Sovereign Prince: I’ll pick you up at 11:30. Ok? The Writer: Wonderful. The Sovereign Prince: Can I have another hug? The Writer: Yes. (The Sovereign Prince gives her a hug and they go join the party again and The Sovereign Prince exits stage left. The spot light fades out.)
