Saturday, June 28, 6:00pm, Do the Right Thing: Through the Lens of the Black Aesthetic, Church of the Advocate, 1801 W Diamond St, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19121 It has been 25 years since the release of Spike Lee’s controversial film, Do the Right Thing. The film was released the summer of June 30, 1989. The late 80’s were turbulent times for the Black community. We just spent eight years under the horrific presidential leadership of Ronald Reagan. The crack cocaine epidemic and police brutality was rampant in the Black community. The majority of Black owned businesses were shutdown. Lee was courageous enough to expose white supremacy in America and its impact on the Black community. Do the Right Thing is one of the best films of the 20th century depicting race relations in America. Lee collaborated with hip-hops most profound rap group, Public Enemy. “Fight the Power” one of the most iconic and revolutionary hip-hop songs appeared on the film’s soundtrack. Lee bridging film and conscious hip-hop was brilliant. Join us on Saturday June 28th as we watch the film and afterwards have a panel discussion. The panel will reflect different perspectives such as hip-hop, activism, film and more. The overall theme of the discussion will be black aesthetics. Q&A will take place after the panel discussion. Panelists: Leah Keturah Caesar - filmmaker and dancer, John Morrison - DJ and founder of Liberation Movie Night, Dr. Rhone Fraser - adjunct faculty teaching English and African American History at Delaware County Community College, Kashara White - student activist and undergraduate student in the African American Studies Department at Temple University, MJ Harris - teaching artist, actor, poet, hip-hop artist, and member of Sela, Moderator, Patrice K. Armstead, activist, cofounder of Building People’s Power Sponsored by: Building People’s Power and Liberation Movie Night Sunday, June 29, 1:00pm, A CASSEROLE IS NOT ENOUGH: BUILDING TEAMS OF CARE IN NON TRADITIONAL COMMUNITIES, Wooden Shoe Books and Records, 704 South St, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19147 LGBT communities tend to rely on families of choice, rather than families of origin for social support. However, when a member is hit by serious or chronic illness, the care provided by non traditional support systems doesn’t always easily mesh with current healthcare and social welfare systems. This is particularly true if there is no one designated primary caregiver, and the person in need of care lives alone. This presentations draws on Kelli’s more than ten years as a community health nurse, her experiences during the early years of the AIDS crisis as well as her lived experience as the primary caregiver of her partner who died of ovarian cancer in 2007. 60-90 minutes in duration.
