School of Law PhD student, Pontian Okoli, was nominated by the University of Dundee as its sole delegate to the “Life Beyond the PhD” Conference held at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor. The interdisciplinary conference lasted from 26th to 29th August 2014 with 61 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from various universities in the UK. There were 16 speakers and facilitators. Pontian gave oral and poster presentations on his doctoral research which focuses on a crucial aspect of private international law and considers its application from an African perspective: promoting the free movement of court judgments. If the increase in trade between Africa and the rest of the world is to be sustained and business certainty ensured, then national rules on the recognition and enforcement of judgments must be clear, effective and appropriate. His theoretical, practical and comparative analysis of those rules in Nigeria and South Africa will in turn provide a platform for an evaluation of the reforms which might be introduced on a pan-African level to facilitate free movement. Pontian obtained his LLM with Distinction (International Commercial Law) from Dundee Law School in 2011. He was engaged in legal practice in Nigeria both before and after his LLM. He also worked as in-house counsel in a leading financial institution just before returning to Dundee in January 2014 to take up a Scrymgeour Doctoral Scholarship.
