Science Snapshot Its that time of year when our researchers will be conducting night dives to document pillar coral and elkhorn coral spawning in the Florida Keys! Biologists observe these spawning events annually to monitor the health of struggling coral species. Researchers will be observing pillar coral in both the Dry Tortugas and Key Largo tonight, Tuesday and Wednesday night, then will spend the remainder of the week observing elkhorn coral in the Dry Tortugas. Elkhorn coral is protected as a Threatened species by the Federal Endangered Species Act, and pillar coral is a state-listed threatened species.
