“Scioto County Officials Monitoring Weather System” Scioto County Commissioners have been monitoring the latest forecast information for the past 24 hours with regard to a potent storm system that will impact the area this evening and into Friday, in conversation with the Emergency Management Agency (EMA). EMA weather sources from TV and National Weather Service at Wilmington all indicate that while the weather conditions during the Trick or Treat Halloween festivities will not be good, the potential for severe storms is forecast to occur after 8 PM tonight or even later in the evening. Seth Binau of the National Weather Service at Wilmington, Ohio said “Bottom line - a very potent storm system will bring a period of windy/mild/showery weather tomorrow afternoon through Thursday evening - into the first part of the overnight on Friday. There will be strong/gusty winds area-wide impacting Halloween activities at all locations in the late afternoon/evening. Showers will also be increasing with some heavy rain rates during that time as well. Right now we expect the potential of severe storms with strong winds to occur AFTER 8 PM - but that is not to say conditions during Halloween festivities will be good. The strong winds/showers will create visibility problems after dark for those trick-or-treating, etc. Temperatures will be mild - in the low 60s during this time. We do NOT expect much (if any) lightning before 8 PM - which is good. The main severe weather threat is tied to the strong cold front crossing the area between 8 PM and 3 AM from west to east.” Likewise, WSAZ TV Meteorologist Brandon Butcher agrees conditions may not be prime for this year’s festivities, the severe threat will come later. And, Butcher said the heavier rain may hold off until most of the Trick or Treat hours from 6- 8 PM, urging parents to get children out early for the best possible conditions. Butcher said rain will approach from the west after 6 pm with gusty winds at times. Butcher said “a sweeping line of showers and storms focused along a front will be advancing through our western counties and then on through West Virginia overnight. It is looking more likely that those western counties will be seeing rain during the evening hours, but all of us should have a plan for showers when heading out in costume. The breezes will be gusting up late in the day too, so perhaps its a good idea to secure some of those Halloween decorations in the yard. You can still get out there and have some fun, but the approaching weather should be kept in mind.” Kim Carver, Scioto County EMA Director said the best way to stay safe and to maximize the amount of time you want to spend outside is to download a Weather App for your Smartphone. You can instantly get a check of the radar and see how close those storms are to you and your kid’s route through the neighborhood. Like the County Commissioners, Carver urged folks to be careful venturing out this evening, as rain and winds will be approaching from the west. Otherwise, the day itself is quiet and mild. Carver said Commissioners reviewed other feasible options like moving the event to Friday but were up against folks heading out to local high school football events. And, Saturday is forecast to be rainy and cold. Sunday was not a good day for church folks so there really was not a good alternate date to reschedule to. And, Carver said many regional communities in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky are still holding their events as scheduled. Carver said residents can go to WSAZ TV’s web site at wsaz/news/headlines/adfasdf-226333031.html to check and see all of the scheduled events. And, Carver said if anything changed with regard to the scheduled event the information would be available on local radio stations and at the local newspaper web site at portsmouth-dailytimes/ .
