Scrub Turkey/Brush Turkey/Bush Turkey Brisbane, Australia I - TopicsExpress

Scrub Turkey/Brush Turkey/Bush Turkey Brisbane, Australia I posted here a couple of months ago about the male Scrub Turkey (Cyril) who was building a nest in my sisters front yard. Here is a picture of the female, Betty, who would come by late in the afternoon to mate with Cyril and lay the eggs. Yesterday afternoon, the first of the hatchlings appeared - we had estimated they would hatch out around New Years Day. The hatchlings are on their own from the moment theyre hatched, and many dont survive. As soon as this baby appeared, several predators also made themselves known - the cat next door, crows, butcher birds and magpies. The baby was running, scared, all around the yard. The advice was to relocate the hatchlings in thick bush, where their chances of survival are higher; so my sister took this one to bushland reserve at 5 oclock this morning and let him/her go. We will do the same with any other hatchlings, as they dont stand much of a chance in a suburban yard. I was driving home the other day and saw a Scrub Turkey trying to cross the road. A man in a 4WD deliberately sped up and swerved to try and hit the turkey, who jumped out of the way and fluttered back onto the footpath. Cars (humans) are listed as one of the biggest threats to the Scrub Turkeys survival.
