Sean Fraenkel is an adventurer, writer and photographer. After 12 years as a commercial diver, he returned to Cape Town, but soon longed for another adventure. He decided to follow the route from Musina to Cape Town through Lesotho as described in the book “Riding the Dragon’s Spine” by David Bristow and Steve Thomas. He calls his adventure the Barking Mad Charity Ride for he is cycling with his two Jack Russels, Turbo and Tequila. The two dogs ride along in a specially- tailored doggy trailer, but sometimes they do enjoy to run along with the bicycle as well. Sean and the dogs are doing this in aid of Pet Empowerment in Townships (PETS) a non-profit organisation in the Western Cape, who looks after animals in townships and poor communities. He embarked on the journey on 14 March 2014. GPSNews caught up with him on 27 March when he was on route between Graskop and Sabie after spending the night in Pilgrim’s Rest. “I do this as a labour of love,” Sean said. He is mostly alone on his journey with only the dogs for company, but he said: “so far the people have made this trip. They are so generous.” While passing through Sabie he sensed another mini-adventure and did a bridge swing at Sabie Falls, actually enjoying it so much, he went twice. He says he hopes to finish the trip in three months as he is trying to avoid the harsh winter conditions through Lesotho.
