Second Sunday of Ordinary Time Readings: usccb.org/bible/readings/011914.cfm Oftentimes we can get very disturbed when, despite our best efforts, we see our kids falling away from the faith. We despair when they get older and stop going to Mass on Sunday. Then they get married and have their own kids, and we wait anxiously for the baptism that doesn’t come. And no First Communion. We just don’t know what to do. But there is reason for hope. John the Baptist reports twice in today’s gospel, “I did not know him.” Then the day came when he saw Jesus and could testify that “he is the Son of God.” God guided John the Baptist along a path that would, in time, bring him to encounter Christ in a very real way. The whole idea of the Incarnation is that Christ becomes one of us and shares fully in our human experience. Somewhere, somehow, in some way every human being can come to know Jesus Christ. Our job is to have faith. And faith is to believe despite all evidence to the contrary. God is showing our children and our grandchildren the way to Christ. And in the deepest, darkest mystery of God’s plan, unknown and unseen by us, God is preparing for that future encounter. There is joy for us when we hold fast to our faith and believe in God’s unyielding love for us and for our children. In that joy, we become part of the plan, supporting, encouraging, and affirming our sons and daughters, not because we believe in them, but because we believe in God. Fr. Joe
