Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Press Reports of Medical Outbreak in Equateur Province August 21, 2014 Local and international media have reported an outbreak of an illness involving diarrhea and fever in the Boende area of Equateur province. The cause of this outbreak is not yet known, but the illness does not appear to be directly linked to the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Testing is underway and results are anticipated to be available this weekend or early next week. The situation is being monitored by the Congolese authorities very closely. Currently, there are not any suspected or confirmed cases of Ebola in either the Democratic Republic of the Congo or the Republic of the Congo. U.S. citizens should avoid all but essential travel to the Boende region of Equateur province. • To obtain Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) travel notices, call the CDC at 1-800-CDC-INFO (1-800-232-4636) from within the United States, or 1-404-639-3534 from overseas, or visit the CDC website at cdc.gov/travel.
