What were looking at here is a bearing that was replaced by a Craigslist mobile mechanic, but he didnt bother to replace the bearing race, instead jamming the new bearing directly into the cast iron hub and tightening the preload nut until it stopped turning. The result of this is a serious safety issue: the wheel could have become detached at any moment while on the road. This mechanic also replaced the brakes on this car trailer, but installed them backwards, so they were constantly applying, melting the internal components, billowing smoke, and ultimately causing damage that will cost many hundreds of dollars to repair. Moral of the story: though we realize repairs are expensive, and the impulse is to shop for less expensive options, try to remember that you are literally placing your life and the lives of others in the hands of your mechanic. The pictures here show a story that ended with, The bill was much higher and fortunately didnt involve killing anyone. I urge you to carefully consider who you allow to service your vehicle. Choose a repair shop that employs ASE certified technicians. Choose a repair shop that has a great reputation for quality. Choose a repair shop that is state-certified to perform safety inspections. Choose a repair shop that is endorsed by AAA and the Better Business Bureau. Choose a repair shop that has been open for years, and will continue to be open for years. Choose a repair shop that gives back to the community. Honest Engine in Henniker meets all of those criteria, and more. Hiring unskilled, unprofessional mechanics to maintain your vehicles can easily cost you more than just money. Remember that the bitterness of low quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price has faded from memory. -Jerry
