See The Christmas Truce of 1914 by Stanley Weintraub. This happened. At first I was rather offended that it is used to sell chocolates. Then I realized that perhaps more people will know of it from the ad campaign than from all the history books in the world. The high command on both sides was so alarmed by this that they took steps each Christmas to make sure it never happened again. Commercialism aside it does provoke a little tear. Doesnt it?
