Niranjan himself had received an “anointing” from evil Hindu spirits while he was still a child. However, his father squandered the family’s wealth and they were forced to leave the temple. Local witches put a curse on the family. Despite his desperate attempts to please the angry and jealous gods of Hinduism, everything seemed to be falling apart.
