Seeking out a neuropsychologist to take the place of my neurologist. Im confident the combined specialty will help me more... why? The type of MS I have is rare ~ the bulk, if not all, of my lesions are in my brain. Most people with MS have lesions in the brain and spine and dont present with so many cognitive and emotional issues.... My spine issues are attributable to other ailments and traumas (scoliosis, arthritis, and multiple mvas). I have a spine/orthopaedic specialist I see for my neck and back. But the symptoms I have from my MS are an enigma to the average neurologist. I present during flare-ups and with increased stress MOSTLY cognitive symptoms... emotional lability, major and worsening memory issues, poor judgment, planning and foresight problems.... I even undergo personality changes... Ive learned to sense when Im not myself and can sometimes recognise when Im going to act irrational or out of character. Oftentimes though, I have my husband to thank for showing me a mirror and saying, whats wrong with you? Why are you acting this way? I usually bark back at first, get defensive and mad that im not being my normal self. But after some time, I see how everything gets jumbled and my normal becomes fragmented. I can usually look back into my prior week or so and see major mood swings, irritability and anxiety. My concern lies in my decreasing memory functionality that would help me grasp awareness of this as it has been able to do so far (but with increasing difficulty). Some physical symptoms coincide with these cognitive and emotional ones. If my stress level isnt controlled and/or I dont stay out of heat then its very possible to have physical symptoms alongside a complete meltdown of reasoning and thus an inability to advocate for myself to receive appropriate treatment. Having a neuropsychologist whod understand all of these things.... especially when I lack the faculties to express them.... is EXTREMELY important to me. First thing Monday morning, im on the hunt. . .
