Self Hatred Self-hatred drives people to do a lot of things. - TopicsExpress

Self Hatred Self-hatred drives people to do a lot of things. In the early church it caused the monks to literally hit themselves with boards, kneel in painful ways for long periods of time, and go out in freezing cold temperatures not dressed well enough. Monks like Francis of Assisi did things like this I think. Today we have things like excessive working out. I think that is really just self punishment. Someone may actually hate themselves, their body or another thing, so they drive themselves to work out like crazy. As if they could work the badness off. Its a kind of penance really. Then there is make up. Those who wear make up actually hate how they naturally look and that is why they wear a lot of make up. I know that because that is how I used to feel when I used to wear make up. I thought I looked horribly ugly without it. Maybe not horribly ugly, but not pretty. Until I realized, that God made me how he did and he says that I am good. So I dont need to change or add anything to what he already did. Amen. Godliness with contentment is great gain. That includes contentment with how we feel about how we look as well. Another form of self punishment is over spending. A title of a book that caught my eye in Barnes in Noble was Youre Broke Because You Want to Be. And there is a lot of truth to that. You may think you dont deserve to have extra money so you spend it all recklessly. It is a way of cutting your own legs out from underneath you. I understand this also because I have done that many times, and gotten many, many overdraft fees in the past. Very sad. :( Its a form of self punishment also. It comes from self hatred. Not taking care of your future and your financial situation responsibly is not just being careless, it can be self hatred. There really is a lot of psychology behind everything we do. People smoke and drink because they hate themselves. People over eat because they hate themselves. People miss sleep and drive themselves to exhaustion because they hate themselves. If we loved ourselves, we would take care of ourselves and our bodies. But Love your neighbor as yourself. We need to love others yes, but we need to love and take care of ourselves as well. Often times we punish ourselves or hate ourselves because we have not forgiven ourselves for something in the past. We are holding a grudge not against someone else, but ourselves. Let it go, whatever IT is for you. God takes your sins away as far as the east is from the west, praise God! But for ourselves we often see our sin or past regret every time we look in the mirror. God said that if we forgive others he will forgive us as well, that includes forgiving ourselves. We are commanded to forgive ourselves. Confess, repent, and move on. Amen.
