Self-Knowledge before Success For the psychological survival of the vast majority of our population in the future, it will be worthwhile to know oneself before pursuing the so called society defined success. It is not uncommon to meet the retired or retiring CEO’s on golf courses or pubs talking about disappointments with their lives and how they missed out on so many things. Most people in the corporate world pursued goals without knowing what they were pursuing and the price they had to pay for achieving those goals. The only sad part is that many young ones are reading the books and articles written by these sad people who are not willing to disclose the downside of success in the material world. Sadly, many young ones will aspire for this success not knowing that only few will succeed in the corporate world and the rest will miss out both on life and their chosen profession. I am writing this article to point out to the young professionals the dangers of articles such as “ten ways to succeed in corporate world” or “six steps to maximise profits in your business. Successful people are those who understood themselves before pursuing success blindly. There is a marked difference between the society recognition of a person who has climbed the corporate ladder and a successful human being who is carrying out his/her responsibilities but have minimum conflict in their lives. It should be remembered that no one has become Tiger Woods by reading a book written on golf techniques by Tiger Woods or have become Bill Gates by reading the autobiography of Bill Gates. The next generation will need to learn how to avoid psychological conflicts in their minds and live intelligently to experience life in its totality so that the coming generation fully understands their responsibilities to themselves and to the society. Most believe that suffocating the mind with knowledge gathered from elsewhere is intelligence. A mind that is full of knowledge is incapable of creativity because it is constantly trying to rearrange the old to create the new, and the new cannot be the product of knowledge which is old. Relentless pursuit of success and efficiency without an element of compassion will hurt an individual as well as the society and finally destroy both. Mahendra Kent
