Self-loathing Ndebeles- wake up and smell the Coffee. Written by Ndaba Nhuku Sunday, 11 August 2013 Okuluma indlebe ngowakho, asivukeni emaqandeni. 1000 Words of Ndebele madness with Ndaba Nhuku My Shona friends, kunyanyisa isu maZezuru, I beg you not to waste your time reading this. This piece of my anger is directed to my Ndebele friends. Matabeleland let me for once, just today, for once, be really angry with you. In my anger I am asking myself, is it okay for a little hare to prod and provoke a tired old lion to see how it reacts, or, is it kindness for an old, tired and hungry lion to chase after a springy fox leaving a newly born hare dazed by its side. Even Jesus spoke in parables, don’t blame me, ndakadzidziswawo. That my writing is ShoNglish instead of NdeNglish is no problem at all, you all speak ,or understand Shona very well, courtesy of Zanu and Gukurahundi. So you are already getting peeved with me? Wait, you aint yet heard the last of me. It’s said once a teacher always a teacher. Growing up, we used to say to boys always running from their pregnant girlfriends, once a runner always a runner. How about a people cornered like you, a people now with nowhere to run to after that Mfecane, later followed by uBulawayo destruction? History tells us that Mzilikazi did a warrior runner from uShaka, and subsequently his son uLobengula chose the destruction of his capital uBulawayo and death, than being captured by the white impisi. What can one say about the contemporary descendants of this once great proud warrior people? In you I see a vanquished people with nowhere to run to because all modern borders are sealed. I sense a people without any self pride any more. I see a defeated people that have left its fate in the hands of others of those who crushed them. A self loathing people that look up to others to serve and save them. What makes you think Harare drips of gold and is awash with cash? I see a people that refuse to rise from the doldrums of Gukurahundi and be assertive and have a sense of self-respect. I see a people that quickly and shamelessly coil once any descriptive label meant to subjugate them is thrown their way. A people that if not seeing Harare as the panacea of their problems sees South Africa as the solution to them, why? Once a proud, but now self loathing people that cannot accept and vote for their own capable leaders. By so doing, are you not agreeing to have others come to solve your problems? A people whose children are taught by strangers speaking a strange language; a people whose police and courts officers do not know their language, a people whose farming lands around Byo have been resettled by people from elsewhere. I see not the renowned intellectuals and businessmen from the region investing and residing in Byo. Why? They all say ‘akula mali koByo’ and go and live in Harare. Once they get snared into crippling debts and lose their wealth they return to the City of Kings cursing thieving Shonas who think Zimbabwe belongs to them! God forbid, this is proper madness. Look at the musicians, and other artists, no names please. They would rather go, live and sing in Ndebele and later Shona in Harare than stay in their city. Why has Matabeleland failed to accept and honour success amongst own sons and daughters? You blame everything on unemployment, underdevelopment, marginalisation and all the ills that Mugabe and his people could throw at you, BUT; Have you ever done a thorough soul searching? Have you ever asked why you prefer other people, THE VERY PEOPLE YOU BLAME FOR YOUR ILLS, TO SOLVE THEM? If for 20 years Zanu failed to finish that Nkayi strip road and to bring water to the dry and dying Matabeleland, why would you think after 33 years in power and at 90 years old, he is capable of successfully doing it now? If MDC T could deliberately destroy Security Mills and run down Bulawayo City Council, why did you think they will serve and save you? I hear some say I am lying, and that it’s only that Mugabe, in the 80s connived with the British and unleashed the brutal murderous Gukurahundi and left the region desolate and subdued; and Nkomo catapulted to save lives. No now, the world has become wiser and the British will not be conniving to that massacre any more. I hear that today, Bob used rigging; hence both Shona-led parties shared the Matabeleland votes spoils, Byo to MDC T and rural Matabeleland to Zanu. What a childish ploy? And who are the Zanu leaders in Matabeleland? Obert Mpofu and Simon Khaya Moyo; both Mugabe’s worshiping sons who kneel down to talk to him!! In MDC T? Sipepa Nkomo, Thoko Khuphe and Gorden Moyo, other simpletons who kneel down to talk to MT!! God, what has happened to this once proud lot? There is this lie that Gukurahundi subdued people such that they now hate politics! No, it’s a bloody big lie. Wake up you Ndebele people and realise that no one, and I mean on one from mars or Harare is going to Nkayi or Binga and solve your problems. Please wake up and smell the coffee, Zimbabwe is yours in as much as it ours, but you got to fight for your own corner! That is why that dry dying corner is called Matabeleland! Accept your leaders to work with the broad political body of Zimbabwe and do not accept the big lie that no one from Matabeleland can be President of Zimbawe. Do not accept to be labelled tribalists only to be discriminated against. Everyone is amazed, did you really choose a 90 years old Robert Mugabe and a confused, clueless flip flopping womaniser as your leaders over a younger, consistent, focused and principled Prof Welshman Ncube? Or, did rigging really take place over a teaspoon of sugar as we are told Lobengula did?
