Semi pro basketballer Roman completing barbell squat jumps for development of low load power = ground based power, explosive hip extension and landing mechanics = eccentric strength = injury prevention = athletic base... Activate muscles that stabilise the joint! Performance coach; jay Ellis A common issue with most traditional strength training patters like bench, squat and dead is the deceleration phase at the end range of motion leading to antagonist co activation = opposite of the muscle doing the work which slows the movement down and decreases power output. By releasing the barbell or projecting into free space ie with the squat jump the deceleration phase is taken out and power/speed can be maximised without the bar or object slowing down! This is why movements such as; plyos, med ball work, max effort sprints, ballistic strength training & o lifts are a great way of developing both low & high load power for the athlete ... Once foundational strength based has developed and athlete is movement competent before progressing into more complex/high velocity patterns! Remember: athletes cant be powerful unless they are strong first... Strength is the foundation of all athletic attributes... If you are not training for strength you are losing it... Hence the importance of a year long strength & power program. Contact wssc now for a science based approach! Info@woodfordssc or PM. #wssc #changingthegame
