Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) Says Obamas Anti-GOP Rhetoric Helped Kill Equal Pay Bill - That Type Of Rhetoric Does Not Help. It Just Doesnt Help. President Obamas preferred method of selling his programs is to attack Republicans. On Fox & Friends, Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) admitted the Presidents strategy has not been helpful. In fact, he claimed the Presidents anti-Republican rhetoric may have helped to defeat the equal pay bill, From the leadership, whether it be the White House or the leadership in the Senate, Republican or Democrat, that type of rhetoric does not help. It just doesnt help. It insulates people and they pretty much hold their ground. Brian Kilmeade began the interview with a clip from President Obamas speech Wednesday: Obama: This isnt just about treating women fairly. This is about Republicans seemingly opposing any efforts to even the playing field for working families. [...] Republicans in Congress are dead set against it. Blocking a pay raise for tens of millions of Americans. [...] They want to show that they do care about women being paid the same as men? Then show me. Killmeade: So why did the bill just fail then in the Democratically controlled Senate? West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin joins us right now from Washington. Senator, you were in support of the bill. So did the President help or hurt the cause? Manchin: From the leadership, whether it be the White House or the leadership in the Senate, Republican or Democrat, that type of rhetoric does not help. It just doesnt help. It insulates people and they pretty much hold their ground. Weve got to find out – OK it failed. I support that. I support basically the paycheck fairness. It failed. Are they going to reach out now to friends on both -- do they have enough friends to bring it back. You don’t build friends up by calling them and lumping them all together. I’ve never been able to do it that way. Killmeade: Didnt that plow the fields for that vote prior to that vote? Manchin: It makes it difficult. Brian, there is no chance of that making it a better a situation for us to be able to move forward. Theyve got a situation now where on Capitol Hill that weve got to start looking at. Are we serious about it? I dont know any Democrat or Republican that doesnt want paycheck fairness. Maybe there’s language in there. Killmeade: I think it’s safe to say either party isnt anti-women. Manchin: I agree. And also for minimum wage. Can we find the middle ground so everyone can move forward?
