Senator Akin Odunsi wrote: I congratulate the good people of Yewa as the National Assembly has adopted the report of the Conference Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution. With this adoption, a major milestone has been achieved with the Bill I sponsored to change the name: Egbado to Yewa. I am also particularly delighted with the passage of the clauses granting financial and administrative autonomies to Local Governments in Nigeria. I had made a case for LG autonomies during my speech titled: Local Government administration and financial autonomy; implications for grassroots development, at the Ita Oba day, Otta, on the 5th of October, 2014. In my speech, I urged the people to shine their eyes and learn to always ask appropriate questions. .............. ..........Most Chairmen and Councillors were installed by state governors. The allocations that are released to the LG Councils can barely pay salaries and overheads. Consequently, all our expectations of a Local Government Council that is closer to the grassroots and should provide dividends of democracy to the masses, are hopelessly dashed. I went further to state that: ............I do not see any reason why those in executive positions cannot find out time out of their busy schedule to once in a quarter arrange town hall meetings and interact with the people. It will be a forum to explain to the people how much inflow from the Federal and State Governments. How much was generated internally, how much went into capital projects? ................. With the adoption of the conference committee report, the clean copies of the newly amended constitution will now be sent to the State Houses of Assembly. To this end, I hereby urge the Ogun State House of Assembly members whom section 9 of the constitution have made critical and distinctive partners, to support the realisation of the new constitution by ensuring a timely passage. Thank you.
