Senator Chris Ngige says his relaxation is complete whenever family and friends are around, writes Anayo Okolie The former governor of Anambra State, Senator Chris Nwabueze Ngige, has a tag he carries about before the public. It is Mr. Due Process. And this culture, he has imbibed since his days in the civil service. He does his things following that principle. As governor, he personally monitored and supervised all the projects awarded by his administration and this deportment, he carried till the end. But unknown to him, his diligence and attitude to work has endeared him to the people of Anambra and the South-east in general. Although, sacked from office by a Supreme Court judgment, he remains one former governor whose achievements during his stint still speak for him. Apart from the massive infrastructural projects he undertook and executed, Ngige, either by act of omission or commission, was also believed to have aided in the liberation of his people of Anambra State from the political godfathers who had made Anambra their private empire. From the story of his adoption to his sack from office, Ngige certainly has a place in the state’s body polity. Indeed, he had faced myriad of political challenges and even much more now that he is the senator representing Anambra Central on the platform of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Interestingly, experience always comes to play for him and it is as a result of this he knows when and where to draw the line between work and relaxation. To keep pressure in check, the former governor prefers to spend quality time with family and friends. This way, he not only catches up on issues and developments, he also bonds with them. Besides, Ngige is also pondering the need to return to his favourite sport- that’s golf. He claimed to be a good golf player, alongside, table tennis, as part of activities that bring him happiness and relax his being. “I don’t know- when I am not playing politics- well, sometimes I hang out with my friends but because they are not politicians, we would end up discussing politics. We discuss other things but they are more interested in discussing politics and what is happening in the country. “So, the actual time I have is when I am reading newspapers, biography and contemporary journals; leaders of the world or those that have passed on. When I read the biography of people like bill Clinton and others, I get relaxed and happy. Of course, you won’t believe it that reading newspapers makes me happy. I also read it to relax, laugh and unwind. “I like to stay with my old friends and they are the kind of friends I like hanging out with. Sometimes, I relax with my family. Sometimes, I will be making fun of their mother and she will be making fun of me and the children will be laughing. Sometimes, they will support me; sometimes, they will side her but most times, they side her. “I like playing Golf but time has not permitted me to. When I was in United States of America, I played Golf. I have my kits but for some time now, I have not been playing but I would want to get back. I also like playing table tennis. It is interesting that Ngige likes dancing too. “If I find myself in any place and there is party or it was dancing time, of course, I won’t be left out. I am also a man of due process. I like things that are properly done. Anything that does not go straight, I don’t like it. I hate corruption and will continue to contribute to the fight against corruption,” Ngige said. A successful doctor, Ngige graduated from the University of Nsukka where he studied Medicine, before he went into the civil service. He had served at the National Assembly and State House clinics at different times and retired in 1998 as a Deputy Director in the Federal Ministry of Health. He, however, ventured into politics and became one of the founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In 1999, he was made the Assistant National Secretary and Zonal Secretary of PDP in the South-east region after which he was elected governor of Anambra State in 2003.
