Senator Cory Booker rocks: Dear Kristin: Thank you for taking the time to write to me about the Keystone XL pipeline. I rely on the input of engaged New Jerseyans like you when making decisions, and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. The merits of building the Keystone XL Pipeline have been debated since it was first proposed in 2008. While proponents state the pipeline will create jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil, these arguments are often overstated and experts have concluded that the long term environmental costs of the multi-billion dollar pipeline far outweigh any short term benefits. In fact, the pipeline is projected to create only 35 permanent jobs. At a time when climate change is worsening, we should not be investing in a pipeline that extracts corrosive and toxic tar sands oil that is estimated to result in up to three times as much greenhouse gas emissions than production of conventional crude oil. The recent tar sands oil spills in Michigan and Arkansas also demonstrate that any tar sands oil spill is more expensive, dangerous, and harmful to clean up than a conventional crude oil spill. We should be investing in green technologies that will create thousands of jobs, reduce our carbon footprint, and help America become more energy independent. We should also invest in a long-term highway and transportation bill to create thousands of construction jobs and improve our critical roads, bridges, and ports. Since the pipeline crosses the border with Canada, the Administration must make a final determination if the pipeline is to be constructed. I oppose the approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline, and I support the Administrations veto of a bill that would allow for its construction. Again, thank you for writing to me. I am honored to represent you in the United States Senate, and I value what I hear from New Jerseyans about the issues our state and nation face. Please continue to keep in touch with your thoughts and concerns. For more information on my work in New Jersey and in Washington, please visit my website at booker.senate.gov.
