Sending hugs to children in distress In conjunction with a Philippino charity, 1000 Bearhugs, the Rotary Club of Silloth on Solway is collecting soft toys for children hit by the recent disaster. 1000 Bearhugs is a heartwarming toy drive campaign to bring huggable bears and soft toys to children displaced by conflict or disaster like super typhoon Yolanda (aka Haiyan). Play is a childs natural language and a means for them to make sense of their experiences. Trauma can be addressed through play therapy and allows a child to speak of what he or she has gone through when they cannot find the words to do so. Toys can provide children with a certain amount of security in a sometimes very scary world. We will be collecting stuffed toys until Christmas and we are encouraging local schools to participate. We would like to stress that we are not asking for you to buy new toys, clean pre-loved ones are very acceptable. The Rotary Club of Silloth will collect the bears from the schools and arrange the distribution to the Philippines. This is not a Christmas appeal as our toys will not be delivered until early 2014. We are aware that there is a huge amount of activity in the Philippines at the moment addressing life threatening needs and want to make sure that our operation doesnt interfere. The Silloth on Solway Rotary contact is Colin Smithson. Home 016973 51395 Mobile 07768 620849 Email [email protected]
