Sent in: You dont have to make it anon, its fine. I just want people to understand something that I don;t think they do whatsoever. Just a hypothetical, and it does stem from something posted earlier, but as a local business owner and someone who makes handmade items, I feel as though people do not understand what is put into a handmade item. Say you have a some yarn in front of you, it is just yarn. You LOVE the elf on the shelf your children have, that you purchased for $30, but you discover that there is such a thing as a Kindness Elf, an elf that has your children do a kind deed rather than report bad deeds to Santa. You look at your yarn, and you say, I am going to make some Kindness Elves to sell! You only buy the best yarn, since you feel it is only right if you charge your customers for it! You spend DAYS figuring out how to design this and make it just the cutest darn elf that Clarksville has ever seen. Each elf takes hours and hours to make. You decide to post your elves for sale for $20, which are of very high quality craftsmanship because you only sell things that are a cut above average since your skills have been finely honed to perfection over the years. These years of skills, high quality materials, and your precious time you could be spending with your family rather than working are most assuredly worth $20 to you (BTW thats not even minimum wage, its more like waitress wages without the tips). You take a photo of your elves, and you post them on your personal boutique page. Someone contacts you to purchase your elves! When told the price, they tell you that its ridiculous. Your time and hard work, it is ridiculous to them. You shrug it off. Your inbox starts flooding with messages, but not good ones! Rather than using your precious time to make more elves, you read over and over again about someone taking the photos from your personal business page (by the way you also went out and purchased a business license, you are not just another crafter) of what you made, and is asking local people who can make it cheaper for them. When you comment and ask that the least they could do is give you credit when they took your photo from your business page, you are called rude. Please think about this, thats all I ask. If you want something made with this quality and materials, that supports local families, this is what goes into it. If you want to save your money and purchase items from overseas, thats your choice. They are two completely different concepts, and they do not cost the same.
