Sent this to a young organizer who recently had an episode on his wall because things werent falling-into-place. Sharing it here because, on hindsight, it applies to a lot of folks who dare to try, and may be struggling. (It may be something that helps me down the road when I too find myself looking at a bottomless pit): When you are a leader . . . you are alone. You are solely responsible for EVERYTHING that the endeavor you are leading does or fails to do. For that reason, when you set your goals it is important that you take stock of what you can do, what you cant do, and what you need help doing. A good leader delegates. But ultimately needs to know what the person to whom you delegated the task is doing -- at least at the broadstrokes level, if not in detail. You designate people to do specific tasks. You dont just assume that people will pick things up. That kind of gap-catching is actually YOUR job. If something is not given attention, you do it . . . until such time you get somebody to commit to do it. If nobody does . . . then you are it. PERIOD Not everybody who volunteers will follow through. Not everybody who says Yes actually means it. The louder, noiser, boisterous, the voice . . . the greater the likelihood that that person will not actually do what he says. Keep an eye out for the quiet ones that are measured in what they offer. Those are the people who are careful about over-commitment, because they actually keep their promises. You DARED to do something. If your effort ultimately fails, then treat it as a lesson learned. At the end of the day what you did is a hell of a lot more than what many noisy trolls on social media do.
