Sent to me by my musical bud Bradley Berg. I have seen Gabriel many times and seen the recreations of The Musical Box both of which are superb. Seeing such great quality musical and Video footage of the band at this point I was struck by many things. First and foremost, how well this group played as an ensemble, reproducing these songs that are complex, musically and structurally, with a coherence and feel that is so palpable even in a video. They are all such great players, but I have to say Steve Hackett gets my vote as the most underrated. I find his approach so different and even on this material that I know well, fresh and a little off kilter (in a good way). Banks is a virtuoso but rarely goes for the Wakeman like flash flourishes that to me border on wanking. Michael Rutherford is like the anchor on bass or guitar, the seeming glue keeping the whole train from derailing. He and Phils vocals are such a great balance to Peters adding such dimension and scape. And Phil, God I hope i get to see him play drums again, so natural and soulful in this progressive setting. As to Mr G, I have to say, I love the theatrics and his presence. It adds an edgy quality that is not as prevalent in his later solo material.I think he could have done well in acting. Watcher, The Musical Box, Selling and Wardrobe... wow, mastery at work.
