Separatists Officially Declare Independence From Ukraine. (by Dow Jones Business News, May 12, 2014) Separatist leaders in the Ukrainian region of Donetsk Monday officially declared their region a sovereign state, the Donetsk Peoples Republic, and asked Moscow to make them part of the Russian Federation, fueling fears that Ukraine could be on the verge of breakup. Denis Pushilin, one of the self-appointed leaders of the separatists, read a statement on behalf of the republic saying that the region as always been part of the Russian world, and thus appealed to Moscow to absorb it. Earlier Monday, the Kremlin issued a statement saying it respected the results of Sundays referendum in the region, which separatists said showed a huge majority in favor of independence from Ukraine. The government in Kiev, backed by its allies in the U.S. and Europe, called that vote illegal and illegitimate. It wasnt clear how the Kremlin would react to the separatists appeal, however. Last week, President Vladimir Putin called on the separatists to delay the referendum to help open dialogue with Kiev, but the separatists went ahead with the vote anyway. Some analysts said the Kremlins move seemed more aimed at distancing itself from the controversial initiative publicly, even though Moscow supported the separatists on the ground. There was no immediate response from the Kremlin to the annexation appeal Monday from the Donetsk separatists.)
