Introduction to Verbal Behavior: Teaching Communication Skills to Children with Autism & Other Developmental Disabilities Presenter: Dr. Vincent J. Carbone September 19 & 20, 2014 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. George Mason University Prince William Verizon Auditorium Participants in this workshop will learn: To conduct a Behavioral Language Assessment To select the most appropriate form of communication for a child To select the communication responses and supporting skills that should be taught first The workshop includes the recommended teaching procedures for those children who have no formal communication skills to those that are near conversational speakers. Dr. Carbone will describe and demonstrate errorless teaching, specific quick-transfer procedures, and the use of both discrete trial training in the natural environment and during an intensive teaching session. Many video tape demonstrations are provided to illustrate the methods to increase spontaneous language and to develop conversational skills. Dr. Vincent J. Carbone is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral with over 35 years of experience designing learning environments for persons with autism and development disabilities. He received his graduate training in ABA at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at Florida Institute of Technology and Penn State University. He has provided the preparatory training to hundreds of persons seeking board certification as a BCBA in several states and overseas.
