{Sept. 3} Childhood Cancer Awareness Month!!! Go Gold!!! This just ripped my heart out. Some of you may not know what DIPG is, or what it stands for, or what it does to a person. I didnt either, until I met some of my tiny friends and their families who have fought and are currently fighting this monster. I have witnessed what DIPG does to these children. It is BRUTAL. It is not fair. I HATE it with a passion. We have lost 2 of my tiny babes, Mariah and Brylee to this monster and Rae is currently fighting hard against the beast. I will be posting about this more than once throughout September, I will probably repeat myself and I dont care if you get tired of hearing it....in my attempts to raise more awareness for my DIPG kiddos and their families. These children are my heart, we need to do more!!! We need more research!!! We need a cure!!! We need to take action!!! {Did you know?} -DIPG has a 0 percent survival rate. The median overall survival of children diagnosed with DIPG is approximately 9 months. The 1 and 2 year survival rates are approximately 30% and less than 10%, respectively. These statistics make it one of the most devastating pediatric malignancies. -DIPG A Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) is a tumor located in the pons (middle) of the brain stem. The brain stem is the bottom most portion of the brain, connecting the cerebrum with the spinal cord. The majority of brain stem tumors occur in the pons (middle brain stem), are diffusely infiltrating (they grow amidst the nerves), and therefore are not able to be surgically removed. Glioma is a general name for any tumor that arises from the supportive tissue called glia, which help keep the neurons (thinking cells) in place and functioning well. The brain stem contains all of the afferent neurons within the spinal cord as well as important structures involved in eye movements and face and throat muscle control and sensation. -DIPG affects the pons portion of the brain stem, rendering nervous system function impossible. Symptoms include Lack of facial control, (droopy eyelids), double vision, headache or headache that gets better after vomiting, nausea and vomiting, weakness, fatigue, seizures, and balance problems. Symptoms can develop slowly and subtly and may go unnoticed for months. In other cases, the symptoms may arise abruptly. A sudden onset of symptoms tends to occur with more rapidly growing, high-grade tumors. ILL CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR YOU, BECAUSE GIVING UP IS NOT AN OPTION. #gogold #childhoodcancerawareness #dipg #weneedacure #nevergiveup #bryleein5 #prayersformariah #raineydays #theJRway
