September 10th – Today is the 88th anniversary of the birth of Roy Brown in New Orleans, who wrote and performed the jump blues “Good Rockin’ Tonight” in 1948, covered by Elvis in 1954. He may have been the first singer to record rock and roll in a gospel style in a career that peaked around 1950, with 14 hits during a 3 year period. Supe Bradshaw probably met him when Roy closed the Johhny Otis Show at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1970, although Supe was only 23 years old at the time. After a fatal heart attack in 1981, the Reverend Johnny Otis conducted his funeral near Roy Brown’s San Fernando Valley home, and later that year he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.
