September 12 – 16 It is nice to be back in an area where we can get good Web service so have been trying to catch up on the Riv from the past few editions as well as Face Book to see what everyone has been up to. On Thursday (Ian’s birthday) the day started out beautifully weatherwise and he was delighted with the phone calls, texts and emails he got so being all buoyed up we went to Kadina for a drive. Called in at the computer shop and they told us Wallaroo and other parts of the Yorke Peninsula are real blackspots for Telstra wireless broadband so at least we knew there was nothing wrong with the laptop. As we were going around the temperature was dropping, the skies were getting darker, a few drops of rain and then all hell broke loose with thunder and lightning and what ended up being 33mls rain in Wallaroo in a few hours!!! It was not the day for sight seeing!!!! The only time we left the van after we got home was to go to Coopers Alehouse on the Marina for dinner which was very, nice. Friday was cold but no rain and sunshine so we visited a few areas on the Peninsula and ended up at Port Victoria – a fishing village – lots of rocks and managed to see a seal having a lovely time playing in the water and as soon as one of the guys on the jetty got a bite – the seal would rip it off the line!!!! He was not happy but it was quite amusing!!! On Sat. we headed further south and have spent the last 2 nights at Point Turton right down the bottom of Yorke Peninsula, The caravan park is above the jetty and breakwater so you just walk out the front and you are there. Even though these places are now fishing villages we have been quite astounded by the number of very large, very modern, very attractive homes that are built here with the majority being holiday homes!!! This park would be one of the neatest we have stayed in. The winds here are quite chilly and I have managed to pick up Ian’s cold so it is strange to have to put layers of clothes on again after months of 30+ degrees!!!! We have been for walks, had dinner at the Tavern on Sat. night and watched the footy and yesterday was a day of beautiful, warm sunshine. Ian spent most of the day catching sand crabs & velvet crabs off the wharf. I made a picnic lunch and we had that on the wharf in the yummy sunshine!! I spent a fair bit of the day soaking up my Vitamin D and doing crosswords. I only started doing them on this trip to stop my brain going to complete mush and now I am hooked on them!!!! The people here are very friendly and we would certainly recommend a visit to the Yorke Peninsula if you are touring South Aust. as it is a bit of a hidden gem with most tourists going to Eyre and Fleurei Peninsulas instead – we will see them next trip as we are running out of time!!! Today we will probably go up to Port Wakefield outside of Adelaide and then will bypass Adelaide as we went there a couple of years ago and make our way home along the Murray River – we should be home sometime next weekend!!! Love to everyone, Jan & Ian xxxx
