September 12th, 2013 RE: The Tom Baker Cancer Centre Team in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer 2013 Dear Team member/Cancer Supporter It gives us great please to give you and our dedicated sponsor’s feedback regarding our recent successes during the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer 2013 (ERTCC). Our team, the “Tom Baker Cancer Centre Conquerors” participated for the 2nd year in this national event, the ERTCC 2013, benefitting the Alberta Cancer Foundation (ACF). This has been a tremendous team effort with summarizing the highlights as follows: 1. The Tom Baker Cancer Conquerors raised $301,254.11 benefiting the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre (TBCC)! The team surpassed the lofty goal of $250,00. A true team effort of hard work, dedication and resilience during a stormy summer 2013. Some of the riders did exceptionally well in raising money: Mike Civitella $22,539.79, Carla Wallace $15,729.79, Jan-Willem Henning $15,632.30, Christine Molnar $10,810.55, Oliver David $10,495.55 and Oliver Bathe $8,265.55. Almost all of the 70+ riders on the team raised their minimum amount of $2500.00, hence the huge success. The money raised will once again be dedicated to patients participating in clinical trials at the TBCC under the leadership of Dr. Gwyn Bebb (Medical Lead, CRU). 2. This exceptional goal was made easier to achieve by the generous $50,000.00 donated by the Calgary Italian Bakery. The bakery celebrated their 50th anniversary and wanted to contribute to the Calgary Community by doing something special. Some of the family members have recently been treated at the TBCC, it therefore made sense to them in giving back to their local Cancer Centre. 3. Team EFW Radiology, lead by Dr. Carla Wallace (Neuro Radiologist), wanted to ensure her Team’s funds would be directed to the TBCC as well. After some discussion, Team EFW then amalgamated with the Cancer Conquerors on February 2013. We ultimately share the same sentiment of keeping the funds local at our CRU at TBCC. They added 20+ riders to the Conquerors team, but also sponsored the team with cycling shirts, water bottles, TBCC stickers and banners. 4. By March 2013, the team had three captains: Jan-Willem Henning, Carla Wallace and Mike Civitella and specific goals were clearly in sight. A brand new logo was designed. The brand name of “Tom Baker Cancer Conquerors” was well established and visible in the corridors of the TBCC. We designed a colorful new cycling shirt, and a shirt was donated and gladly accepted by Calgary’s Mayor Naheed Nenshi. 5. The team hosted several fundraisers including: TBCC and EFW team launch evening of the new “ Tom Baker Cancer Conquerors”, a team spinning event at the Calgary Women’s Show, Wine and Cheese evening at Lake Heritage Point, Women’s Health Breakfast at D’Arcy Golf Club, Soccer Skills Camp at Edison School, TBCC barbeque co-hosted with OneAim team, Trixtan Magic Show at Foothills Hospital and Multisports Canada Run/Walk at Lake Heritage Point in July. This speaks to a very busy and active fundraising campaign, but ultimately reflective of efficient teamwork! 6. The Tom Baker Cancer Conquerors sent out a clear message through media and the story of our team featured on: Breakfast Television, Shaw TV Go! Calgary, Calgary Herald, Calgary Sun, CTV noon news hour, Metronews, Western Wheels Okotoks, Country 105.9 FM and the Eagle FM 109. The message: “Raising money for clinical research at TBCC to give patients the opportunity of participating in more clinical trials, more treatment options and potentially better treatments. Clinical trials are a huge source of optimism, getting us closer in conquering this disease.” 7. The ride was postponed from June 25/26th to August 10th and 11th due to the devastating floods the week of June 22nd in Southern Alberta. This was the first time that any ERTCC had to be postponed. Nonetheless, on August 10th, we set off from the Grey Eagle Casino for a gorgeous 2 day ride amongst breathtaking Kananaskis Country, southwest of Calgary. More than 60+ riders were able to ride on the new date/course and all of the riders finished the 220+km. Once again, a remarkable team effort! The organizers of the Alberta ERTCC 2013, including the ACF, once again did a fantastic job in hosting a safe and most enjoyable weekend. More than 1660 riders participated and the event raised $7.5 million! 8. The Tom Baker Cancer Conquerors were 3rd overall in number of riders participated, but also in amount raised, following the Enbridge and One Aim teams. But, dare we say, we were the best looking bunch with our own team shirts, tents and banners at the start, campsite and finish. We captured the attention of many, including public and media. It has been a huge privilege to be part of this remarkable group of people. We had 5 cancer survivors, many physicians and nurses as well as other professionals sharing our desire and passion of curing cancer on the team! Riders from the TBCC included, Alexander Paterson, David Skarsgaard, Jackson Wu, Oliver Bath, Jan- Willem Henning, Mike Civitella, Alice-Ann Vander Voet and Sabine Moritz. In fact, we will continue to build on our recent success and the Tom Baker Cancer Conquerors will be riding in 2014 again! Lastly, we do want to mention that this epic event, the Alberta ERTCC 2013, saw the following leaders in cancer riding: Myka Osinchuk, John Osler, Matthew Parliament, John McKay, Alexander Paterson, Michael Civitella and Paul Grundy. This is a testimony that these individuals truly believe in the phenomenal impact we have, not only by participating in this prestigious event, but also riding themselves and declaring: cancer can be beaten! This one was for all our cancer patients! Regards, Jan-Willem Henning, Michael Civitella and Carla Dr. Jan-Willem Henning Medical Oncologist, Tom Baker Cancer Centre 1331 – 29th St. N.W.
