September 15, 2014 I just want to share a Psalm with you today - TopicsExpress

September 15, 2014 I just want to share a Psalm with you today where David was feeling forgotten, struggling with himself on the inside, feelings of sadness, defeated, and worst of all that his prayers were going unanswered. He even feared that if God didn’t do something that he would experience death and go down in defeat. I think you could diagnose David’s case as a severe case of depression and he was being overcome by fear. Maybe you feel that way today, maybe you feel forgotten by your friends or family and maybe the devil has whispered in your ear that God has even forgotten you. Maybe you are experiencing negative feelings that you just can’t shake. Something that you have tried to defeat just keeps defeating you. And you wonder, “How long will this keep going on?” I want to encourage you to do what David did in this Psalm. Change your focus. The first 4 verses of this Psalm David’s focus were on himself and his problems, the last 2 verses his focus was on God. David had decided, even if he was disappointed with God, he was going to still serve Him. The result was three-fold. 1) He knew he could trust in the fact that God loved him. (Verse 5a), “But I trust in your unfailing love;” We cannot use the word “unfailing” a lot anymore. But the fact that God loves us, will never fail. 2) He found his heart could rejoice in God’s salvation. (Verse 5b) The fact that God would save Him in the end. 3) His woes turned to worship. Even if he didn’t feel like it, he started singing to the Lord; no matter what was going on he had decided that God had been good to him.” More than ever in my life, I realize that worship is a participating event, not me waiting on God to do something more, He has already done enough to deserve my worship. If you feel depressed, overwhelmed, discouraged today, I encourage you to read Psalm 13 and come to the same conclusion that David did, “God has been good to me.” Psalm 13 (NIV) 1 How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? 3 Look on me and answer, LORD my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death, 4 and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,” and my foes will rejoice when I fall. 5 But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. 6 I will sing the LORD’s praise, for he has been good to me
