September 16, 2014 “Who’s On Your Committee?” Erma Bombeck, the late advice columnist and humorist, made a very astute observation in one of her trademark writings for which she known. She said, “In everyone’s head there is a committee that votes on what you should do, say, or be!” She was “spot on” in her comments because each decision we make is a confluence of impactful experiences and things said to us by significant individuals from our past or present. There is an imaginary group of people in job or relationship for you!” Your committee is voting on everything that applies to your life! Whenever we speak, we unconsciously pull from our memory bank the words, lessons, and impressions left on us by parents, spouses, grandparents, teachers, mentors, friends, spouses, and the list goes on and on. Even in the area of decision-making, it can be good or bad… depending who is on your “committee.” Here’s the thing… no matter who else is sitting on your committee, you must make sure Jesus is sitting at the head of the table! Every decision must go through the filter of the Word of God. When making any decision, ask yourself some diagnostic questions: 1. Would Jesus give my decision His “stamp of approval” or veto it? 2. Does my decision fall into popular opinion or a wise decision? 3. Will the outcome of this decision bring good results? 4. Does my decision violate principles of God’s Word? 5. Am I seeking God’s will in my decision? 6. Does my decision honor God? It is important to know who is on your “committee. You must know and understand the influences in your life… and whether your decision are made out of tradition, family culture, societal pressures, church doctrine (which is different from Bible doctrine), or lustful desires of self-gratification. And above all else… listen to Jesus… make sure He presides over every committee meeting! Michael Gordon
