September 19-21, Trieste will host the Biennial Conference of The Associazione Italiana di Studi Nord-Americani Discourses of Emancipation and the Boundaries of Freedom 22nd AISNA Biennial Conference - Trieste, 19-21 September 2013 Ever since the Declaration of Independence, emancipation and freedom have been foundational concepts in U.S. culture, concepts that have been invoked, contested, and redefined throughout American literature and history. The year 2013 will mark a series of important anniversaries connected with freedom and emancipation, including the 230th anniversary of the Treaty of Paris, the 165th anniversary of the Seneca Falls Convention, the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation proclamation, and the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. The 22nd AISNA biennial conference that will take place in 2013 will examine the past and present significance of emancipation and freedom in the United States, their impact on American literary production, and the continuing negotiations between liberty and bondage in American history.
