September 24, 1967 ... Atop the Billboard chart, Memphis rockers The Box Tops, featuring Alex Chilton, with "The Letter." It was written by country musician Wayne Carson Thompson and produced at the legendary American Sound studio by Dan Penn. Penn encouraged sixteen year old Alex Chilton to "get a little gruff," and he and Thompson were surprised by the deep, gravelly voice that emanated from the teenager. The demo was picked up by Bell Records, who released it on their Mala label in July 1967. "The Letter" climbed steadily up the chart, reaching #1 and remaining there for four weeks. It became an international hit, reaching Top Ten throughout Europe, as well as Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia. "The Letter" became the #1 song for the entire year of 1967.
