September 7, 1916: The Workmens Compensation Act is passed by Congress and signed by President Woodrow Wilson to provide financial assistance and medical care for workers who were temporarily or permanently disabled as a result of work-related injuries. Taking advantage of Workmens Compensation removes the ability of an employee to sue the employer in a compensation bargain. The program is administered by each state, and some, such as West Virginia and Nevada, have decided to privatize it.
