September 8, 1971: Elvis Presley is given the Bing Crosby Award. The award is given to recording artists who “during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic or scientific significance to the field of phonograph records.” Elvis joins an elite group of honorees; only five artists had previously received the award: Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Irving Berlin.
