September is Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness Month. I have lost 2 - TopicsExpress

September is Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness Month. I have lost 2 aunts and 1 uncle to the disease since 2008. My aunt Betty still lives with Sickle Cell Anemia, and I want to bring awareness to it so that we can get some help and answers for it. It is my goal to post information throughout the month to help bring awareness and raise money for research. My aunt Margaret Hadnott devoted her life to research and awareness for SCA until she lost her fight in July 2014.. Heres my first fact: Sickle cell disease (SCD) affects people of many racial and ethnic groups. In the United States, 90,000 to 100,000 people―mainly Blacks or African Americans―have SCD. The disease occurs among about 1 of every 500 Black or African-American births and among about 1 out of every 36,000 Hispanic-American births. Other people affected include those of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Asian origin. In addition, more than 2 million people carry the sickle cell gene that allows them potentially to pass the disease on to their children.
