Serious assault charge, Smithfield July 5, 2014 at 8:11 pm Police have charged a man after an assault at a park in Smithfield this morning. Around 7.30am police were called to a disturbance between a man and a woman at Redcap Bend. Police will allege when they attempted to detain the man he failed to comply with police direction and punched a male officer in the head. A physical altercation ensued between the man and police resulting in the officer deploying OC spray. It is alleged the man continued to threaten police at which time the officer presented a taser. The man was detained without further incident. The officer was taken to the Cairns base hospital for treatment of minor injuries. A 22-year-old Mount Sheridan man has been charged with serious assault police and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrate’s Court on July 7.
