Seriously? How many times do they need a recess? Unemployment Benefit Extension EUC 2014; Extended Benefits News Update for long term U.S. jobless Posted on | April 2, 2014 | 109 Comments Today’s long term unemployment benefit extension news update April 2, 2014: Unemployment benefits for the long term unemployed in the U.S. remained on hold through Tuesday’s session. The whirlwind of opinion and criticism revolving around the current Senate deal has many worried that the bill might not have a chance in the House even if it makes it through the Senate. The legislation rests in the Senate right now but has recently made progress. The Senate voted to end the filibuster against the deal recently and due to this vote of approval, the extension deal is expected to pass through the Senate. The deal passed the 60 vote threshold last week and another step was taken during Monday’s session to advance the measure. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., moved to set the bill up for a final Senate vote this week. The Senate must wait 30 hours before it can take the final vote. The final vote will require 60 votes of approval for the deal to pass through the Senate. The last time a vote was taken in the Senate on an extension plan, the extension deal failed to pass by one vote. Over 2 million Americans hope that outcomes are different this time around. Many Senate lawmakers state that they expect the long term unemployment benefit extension deal to pass through to the House. John Boehner, House Speaker, is still against the benefit extension deal. He remains against it because of its “unworkability” and its lack of “job creation” power. Many should keep in mind that if the deal reaches the House, they go on recess for two weeks after April 10th, 2014. The unemployed could be waiting for weeks yet.
