Sermon Title: Gods greatest gift to mankind, the Bible. What Can The Bible do for You? Sun. Dec. 14th,2014 Text: Psalms 19:7-11 Intro: Sometimes a president will say a one liner and that one liner will forever mark his presidency. George H.W. Bush; His presidency is marked from a statement he made: Read my lips, no new taxes. John F. Kennedy; Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what can I do for my country. What can the your Bible do for you? For over 3,000 years, people have been touched by the word of God. (Psalms 119:18) Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. Abraham Lincoln once said: “I believe the Bible is the best gift God ever gave to man.” Apart from the salvation we have in Jesus Christ the next best gift God has given to man is the Bible. The Bible is the best-selling book of all time. The Bible is a great influence on our world. Everyone ought to know the Bible because it changes more lives than any other piece of literature in history. (Psalms 19:7-11) 7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. I. THE BIBLE CLAIMS A. The Bible claims it can convert or make alive your soul when you’re feeling discouraged. – Ps. 19:7a (James 1:18) Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. B. The Bible claims it can make you wise. (even if you’re a simpleton) – Ps. 19:7c C. In Ps. 119:99, it claims that it can make you smarter than all your teachers. (Psalms 119:99) I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. D. (Ps. 119:105), it claims that it will guide your life, like a divinely-assembled GPS, if you will let it. (Psalms 119:105) Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. E. The Bible claims that if you’re feeling dirty, it can wash your soul from sin. (Ephesians 5:26) That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, F. It claims that if you’ll memorize it, it will keep you from sin. (Psalms 119:11) Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. G. It claims that it can enlighten your eyes to how life really works. (Psalms 19:8) The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. H. It claims that it will reveal truth to you about yourself. (Hebrews 4:12) For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. I. It claims that it will prolong your life, if you live by it. 10. In Isaiah 55:11, the Bible claims that whenever Scripture is spoken, it does something that God wants to have done. (Isaiah 55:11) So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. If a book could do what this book claims it can do, how great a gift would that be? Making claims is one thing, but can the Bible back it up? Is there any evidence to suggest that the Bible can actually do what it claims it can for you? Joshua 1:6. Joshua had just assumed leadership of his nation. He and the Israelites are standing on the east side of the Jordan River, about to invade the land of Canaan. God tells Joshua to do Two things in order to experience prosperity and success. II. THE BIBLE OFFERS PROSPERITY AND SUCCESS A. First he says, Keep thinking about this book. Think about it frequently – day and night, and deeply – that’s what “meditate” means. B. Second, he says, Keep doing what you find in this book. Do what it says. Live it out. Put it into practice. “Joshua,” God says, “if you will live by this book, you will be prosperous and successful.” – How many of you would like to be prosperous and successful? Joshua’s never led a people before. But over the next 7 years, he conquers 31 tribal nations. At the end of his career, the “land of Canaan” has become “the land of Israel.” He and his people settle in houses they haven’t built and eat grapes from vines they haven’t planted. Joshua’s final word to the people is, “…every good promise of the Lord has come true…” Joshua 23:15. It’s one of the best gifts God ever gave man. If you’ve ever wanted to be prosperous and successful, Read the Bible. Talk about it, think about it, do what it says. If you do this, God says you will be prosperous and successful. God’s Word proved its claims in Joshua’s life. It’s proven its claims in my life. And it will prove its claims in your life. (Psalms 1:1-3) 1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Concl. That’s God’s promise to those who talk about, think about and do what’s written in the Bible.
