Sermon Topic Sunday 7/28/13 Elder Dennis Trudgen This morning we sang Hymn #234, Holy Is The Lord … why were we singing this? what is it telling us? We also sang #232, Praise Him Praise Him … why? What were we thinking/feeling as we sang the words? People like to sound nice when they are singing … but praising Him is the important thing. The choirs of angels ceaselessly sing His praises. The songs convey the Gospel, the Word, even prophecy … all the earth shall sing His glory. There are many who do not know, who do not choose to know. The Influence Of Music The angels praise Him forever (Revelation 4:8, Isaiah 6:3, 1 Nephi 1:7 msl) Music has been used since the beginning of creation to convey emotion. Music has ties to our emotions, to feel praises, the pomp of a parade, patriotism, the sound of war, the call to worship, sounds of happiness and sadness Music can be used to sway the mood of a group of people Genesis 4:21 … Jubal … was the father of all such as handle the harp and the organ (Strong’s H5748, a reed instrument) 1 Samuel 16:14-23 … soothing King Saul with music. His soul was tormented because of his disobedience to God, through pride. The Lord was with David, and his music comforted Saul. 1 Chronicles 15:16, 24-29 … the Ark of the Covenant being transported to Jerusalem, with singing and instruments accompanying. Who carried the Ark? V.2 The LEVITES … nobody else! David had learned from his mistake of 1 Chronicles 13:7-13. 2 Chronicles 29:25-30 … the cleansing process for the Temple, under Hezekiah … music and singing in worship and praise. Asaph the seer (v. 30) has some songs in our Psalms also, and many of our songs have the words of David and Asaph – Gospel and prophecy, and even prayer. We find differing attitudes in the use of music and song. Ether 3:8-11 … the Jaredites – during that long voyage, when they were sealed in their barges, they commended themselves unto the Lord, and sang praises to Him. This is the difference between a believer and a non-believer … we all are in perils and trials at times … the unbeliever may bargain with the Lord – do we? maybe we need to face a peril, to yield the peaceable fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:11 msl), to stir us up in remembrance to call upon the Lord. 1 Nephi 5:182-185 … Lehi’s party had been at sea many days. Laman, Lemuel, the sons of Ishmael, and their wives, got crude and rude, and forgot who had brought them thus far. There are many types of worldly music today … and like Laman and his followers, they dance and sing with much rudeness. Daniel 3:5-11 … the sounding of all kinds of instruments, calling the people to worship the great idol of Nebuchadnezzar Do we worship the works our own hands have made? The sins coming on our society are preparing us, as the frog in the kettle of water, to accept false worship … the gospel of “tolerance”, coming in little by little … but then there will be the call to false worship. Hananiah, Azariah, and Mishael, when called to worship the idol, did not bow down. Can we walk away from our things? The time may come when we have to. 1 Nephi 1:4-7 … Lehi, overcome by the things he saw and heard from the pillar of fire, went home and went to bed, and was given a vision … the angels singing and praising God. Exodus 15:1-2 … Moses and the people sang praise to the Lord after He overcame Pharoah … the ladies danced and sang their praises. Have we felt to sing and to praise when we have overcome, or just for our being here? Revelation 15:2-3 … the song of those who had triumphed over the beast and his mark … they sang the song of Mosis and the song of the Lamb. There will be difficult time ahead … we must overcome. The Lord said to be watching and praying. We will not be able to withstand the forces of evil without the Lord, His Spirit, and the Gospel. Matthew 26:30 … the disciples sang a hymn after supper … what was that hymn? (from the Ryrie Study Bible … “probably all or part of Psalm 115-118, the traditional Passover Hallel [praise to God msl]) – Charles Caldwell Ryrie Moroni 6:9 … the meetings of the church were led by the Spirit … even to sing. To Feel Praise Mormon 3:27-29 … It takes the Spirit of Christ to appreciate Gospel music … those who don’t, are repulsed by it. Saul even threw a spear at David, when the music no longer soothed him (1 Samuel 18:11). What about our emotions? … there are many verses in the Psalms about praising God with our “whole heart” … the heart is not just our emotions, but our entire character, the essence of who we are. Mosiah 1:88 … the blessed and happy state of those who keep His commandments Mosiah 9:66-67 … sing to His praise forever Alma 3:46-48 … the song of redeeming love The question arises … how can those who use music for praise and worship, step out of character and listen to the world’s music – that can promote lewd, lustful, angry, and evil feelings with its lyrics? (James 3:9-11) The enemy uses music too! … James 3:5-8, the power of the tongue I hope you think differently when you are listening to entertainment … is this pleasing to the Lord? Does it matter to you, to please the Lord? Is this our spirituality and love for God? Ephesians 5:19-21 … singing, making melody in your heart….
