Sermon for 12-21-14 Splendor That Befits Majesty and Glory II Peter 1:16-21 In this, his second writing, Peter reminds his readers that he was an eyewitness of the majesty of Christ. He is careful to point out that he had not been deceived. In the book of Acts, there are those who marveled at his lack of learning (in an academic sense) yet are astonished at the power and conviction with which he preached. The reason for this is that he was indeed an eyewitness to several of the things that helped construct and confirm his faith. Peter recalls hearing the voice of God the Father when he proclaimed, concerning Christ, this is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Revelations such as this serve as the firm foundation from which Peter launches his ministry of exhortation. Using the concept of light, he encourages those early Christians to cherish those things they know to be true paying attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place. Carrying the imagery further, he writes they are to do this :until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. What a description during this season! He ends the chapter reinforcing the validity and the authority of Scripture. At this time of year, what a reminder this is of the nature of the Word of God. Let those who refuse to identify with inerrancy and infallibility do so. But let us, who are the recipients of the good grace of God be ever more mindful of the truths contained in the Scriptures. We must not stop at simply mouthing these things however, we must live them God help us to do so. A lost, dying world in total darkness, is in desperate need of the light of the Word of God.
