Seven years ago today, July 29, 2007, my daughter, Tia, and I drove to New Philadelphia, Ohio and picked up a half hairless little female yorkie/shihtzu mix from a dog pound out there. I named her Gracie and we headed back to New York State with my new furkid. Well let me tell you about that little 10 pound doglette. She was almost 7 years old when we picked her up and she came completely house trained, knew some cute tricks and was sweet, loving and super smart. She was missing a lot of hair as a result of flea allergies, but with proper care and love and some flea meds her hair grew back very quickly. My husband, Joe, did NOT want a dog. Nope..not at all. Can you say NEVER? He gave in and let me go get her, but even the morning of my journey he was nervous and unsure about getting a pound dog. After a 13 hour round trip to Ohio and back I dropped Tia off at her apartment and I started talking to Gracie. I told her the big test was coming and I told her not to be scared. Be my brave girl and go right up to the man who resembled a bear and show him some of her love. Well it appeared she was listening to me very closely.....head tilt...eyes on me...paying attention to my every word. We got to our house and I opened the door and in she walked....as though she had always lived there...tiny and bold and so CUTE she marched through the house and right up to the hairy beast in the chair and sat down in front of him...and then she placed both front feet on his leg and tilted her head as if to say, Here I am and you will LOVE me forever, I PROMISE! I watched a man who didnt want a dog melt right there in his chair and fall completely in love with my sweet girl. It was a wondrous thing to see and his love for her is still wonderful. I wish all pound/shelter dogs could be so lucky! I wish all humans could be so lucky as to have such a wonderful furkid as our Gracie. Today is our anniversary of adopting Gracie. she will be 14 soon and is slowing down. Her health is not so great, but I promise we will love her to the end and forever after because she is our baby and that my friends is the way it is supposed to be when you adopt a furkid. Happy Anniversary Gracie!! You are so very loved!!! PLEASE ADOPT A SHELTER DOG!! SAVE A LIFE!!! IT IS SO REWARDING!
