Several important events in the KC area: Rev. James Atwood, a retired Presbyterian minister from the DC area, has written a book called, America And Its Guns: A Theological Exposé and has spent more than 30 years trying to work toward common sense restrictions on gun access in our country. He believes, among other things, that the faith community has a role to play in this effort but avoids this by passing off the issue of gun control as a "political issue" and not a religious one. Rev. Atwood will be in Kansas City June 12 through June 16th. He will give a Book Talk at the Plaza Library on Thursday, June 13th at 6:30 p.m. (free reception hosted by the KC Public Library at 6:00). He will also be part of a Candlelight Vigil on the Plaza on Friday evening, June 14, which is the 6-month anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shootings. Mayor Sly James, Alvin Brooks, Cass County Prosecutor Teresa Hensley, and a Deputy Chief of the KC Police Department will speak, among others. The vigil will focus on the lives lost to gun violence in our community. Rev. Atwood will preach and give a talk on Sunday, June 16 at Second Presbyterian Church in Crestwood.
