Several people have asked about the icon used in promotional materials related to the Apostolic Pilgrimage. This icon (pictured below) is of Sts. Peter and Andrew and was commissioned by Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, of blessed memory, and given to Pope Paul VI to memorialize their 1964 meeting in Jerusalem. The icon, titled, The Holy Apostolic Brothers (or Holy Brother Apostles) depicts the brothers, Peter and Andrew of Galilee, embracing. Above each Saint is the cross of their martyrdom. The epithet for Saint Peter is Leader and for Saint Andrew is First-Called, denoting their roles in the original Twelve. To learn why Sts. Peter and Andrew were depicted in this icon: apostolicpilgrimage.org/the-apostles-andrew-and-peter The inscription at the bottom reads: “To His Holiness, the Pope of Rome, Paul VI [from] Athenagoras of Constantinople in remembrance of [our] meeting in Jerusalem. January 5, 1964.” In the lower right corner, the iconographer is recorded as Monk Meletios Sykiotes, of Karyai, Mount Athos, 1965.
