Severe Weather Warning IDN28500 Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds and damaging surf for people in the Metropolitan, Hunter and Illawarra forecast districts Issued at 10:55 am EDT on Wednesday 15 October 2014. DAMAGING WINDS AND SURF FOR THE HUNTER, CENTRAL COAST, SYDNEY AND ILLAWARRA, EASING. Weather Situation The small scale low pressure system that crossed Sydney last night with thunderstorms, heavy rain and severe winds associated has moved to the northeast and weakened. A second low lies well offshore Sydney this morning and is producing strong to marginally gale-force winds along the coastal fringe of the central part of the coast. This system is expected to move slowly to the southeast this afternoon and evening with winds easing. Gale force southerly winds over coastal waters are producing heavy surf along the central part of the coast. The surf will slowly decrease late today and this evening. Heavy rain and flash flooding are no longer expected. Damaging winds averaging up to 65 km/h with peak gusts of 90 km/h are possible for the coastal fringe of the Metropolitan, Hunter (including Central Coast) and Illawarra forecast districts. Winds are expected to ease this afternoon. VERY HEAVY SURF which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion is forecast for the Metropolitan, Hunter (including Central Coast) and Illawarra forecast districts, particularly south facing beaches. Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas. Waves are expected to slowly decrease late today and tonight. 143 mm of rain was recorded at Sans Souci, 142 mm at Cronulla, 127 mm at Oatley, 124 mm at Marrickville, 121 mm at Canterbury in the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday, though most of the rain fell in a four hour period between 8pm and midnight Tuesday. A 161 km/h wind gust was recorded at Wattamolla 9:02pm Tuesday. A 107 km/h wind gust was recorded at Sydney airport at 10:40pm Tuesday. A 104 km/h wind gust was recorded at Kurnell at 10:13pm Tuesday. Waves of 6 metres frequently reported from the buoy of Sydney this morning with maximum waves in excess of 8 metres. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. Keep clear of fallen power lines. For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500. The next warning will be issued by 5:00 pm EDT Wednesday. This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureaus website at bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218.
