Severe weather outbreak possible today Jun .29, 2014 Midwest | - A fairly strong jet stream and cold front for late June will produce more severe thunderstorms from northern Kansas into Minnesota, Wisconsin and Upper Michigan today. - Damaging wind gusts, large hail and a few tornadoes are all possible. The state with the greatest threat for tornadoes will be Iowa today and this evening. - Heavy multi-inch rainfall could worsen the lingering flooding in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. - Scattered showers and thunderstorms will target the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, remainder of the mid-Mississippi Valley and northern North Dakota today. - Strong westerly winds could gust over 40 mph in North Dakota. - Highs today will range from the 70s and low 80s north to the 90s in the central Plains. - The severe and heavy rain threat continues Monday from Kansas to Michigan. The Ohio Valley, North Dakota, eastern South Dakota and Minnesota will see scattered thunderstorms. South | - Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will develop today from Arkansas and northern Louisiana into parts of the Southeast. - At the same time, low pressure will be drifting southward off the Southeast Coast and could develop into a tropical cyclone in the upcoming days. - Highs will range from the upper 80s in much of North Carolina and Tennessee to near or over 100 across west Texas. - A few severe thunderstorms are possible across western Texas and northern Oklahoma Monday. A few thunderstorms will pop across the Southeast. The potential tropical system will be lurking in the Atlantic, just east of Florida. Northeast | - Much of the region will be dry today, thanks to high pressure centered offshore, but a few thundershowers will creep into West Virginia, western Virginia, western Maryland, western Pennsylvania, Upstate New York and parts of interior New England. - Highs will be in the 80s. - Scattered showers and thunderstorms spread slightly farther eastward across the interior on Monday with highs again in the 80s. West | - Most of the region will be dry today. A few showers or thundershowers are possible near the Canadian border and in western Washington. - Strong westerly winds across northern and eastern Montana may gust over 40 mph at times. - Highs will range from the 60s and 70s near the Canadian border to near 110 in the Desert Southwest. - Showers and a few thundershowers will target Montana Monday. There may be a few thunderstorms in eastern New Mexico and southeast Colorado. The Far West heats up where drought conditions will only worsen this coming week.
